In 2004, Atlantic States resolved to become more integrally involved in the Phillipsburg community and created the Atlantic States Community Advisory Panel (ASCAP). The ASCAP provides a forum for honest and open discussions among company and community leaders develops ideas for improving the quality of life in Phillipsburg and provides financial support to many worthwhile community groups, organizations and events. The panel meets once a month and is comprised of many community leaders, residents and Atlantic States employees.
Less than two years after its founding, the ASCAP has made tremendous strides and continues to leave its imprint on the Phillipsburg community. The ASCAP and Atlantic States have worked together to address a number of local concerns. For example, Atlantic States has re-routed in and out bound trucks away from the downtown area, eliminated truck parking and idling on Sitgreaves Street, eliminated sources of nighttime noise, and improved the quality and timeliness of response to complaints. The ASCAP also initiated a dialogue between Atlantic States and Phillipsburg Police Department, which resulted in the removal of abandoned cars in the neighborhood surrounding the Atlantic States facility.
The ASCAP participated in a plant tour and discussed air quality and mercury issues relating to the plant’s operations. The ASCAP also endorsed a letter to the New Jersey Legislature supporting legislation that would require mercury switches to be removed from the end of life vehicles.
In addition to its community involvement, the ASCAP has contributed nearly $60,000 to projects that have benefited the Phillipsburg community. Additionally, Atlantic States Cast Iron Pipe Co. has donated the services of the foundry’s two master carpenters to repair the Phillipsburg’s Youth Corps building, which was severely damaged by flooding.
