Safety Efforts for 2005

1. Spent a total of $2,069,041 on safety related items and improvements

2. Implemented a SCAT team consisting of all key management personnel which meets weekly

3. A SCAT list was developed to track safety corrective action items. 1,465 documented items were corrected.

4. Safety programs and procedures that were implemented:
a. PPE assessments were conducted for all jobs plant wide
b. Supervisors are conducting weekly, documented, safety audits of their areas
c. Superintendents conduct monthly, documented audits
d. Lockout program including machine specific procedures were developed for all equipment and posted at the machine
e. Confined space program including the confined space inventory was developed and space specific procedures were developed for all spaces
f. Powered Industrial truck program consisting of training and driving evaluation.
g. Shock watch system was installed on all powered industrial trucks to monitor who operates trucks and to ensure only authorized and trained employees operate the equipment
h. Safe operating procedures were developed for:

• Iron pouring operations
• Cleaning the spill ring
• Access to up and over
• Up and over pipe removal
• Oven wreck
• Walking in front of the casting machines
• Controlling water levels in the casting beds
• Access to bull ladle pit
• Water in bull ladle pit
• Maintenance of the pig bed
• Access to the cupola top
• Cupola backfire
• Bottom drop
• Cupola emergency incident
• Use of fall protection on lime deck
• Access to upper coke platform
• Pipe rolling
• Pipe stacking and bundling
